Ladies lift County Cup

9 April 2014

MK Dons Ladies won the BBFA County Women's Senior Cup on Sunday evening after an impressive 3-1 victory over Woodley United.

Matt French’s side, who saw off Maidenhead United and Stony Stratford Town in the previous rounds, emerged as victors from the weekend’s final thanks to goals from Charly Wright, Heather McDonnell and Lil Stanton.

Speaking after the deserved triumph, manager Matt French told mkdons.com: “Tonight was a great occasion for the female section of the club, winning our first silverware in three seasons.

“All the credit has to go to the ladies for their approach because they worked really hard to get the result we needed against a side that haven’t lost many games at all this season.

“This shows that the club is moving in the right direction and that we should be challenging for more honors in the future.”

MK Dons chairman Pete Winkelman and MK Dons SET chief executive John Cove were among the Dons supporters which had made the journey to Abingdon to cheer their side on.

A number of the Girls Centre of Excellence players and their parents were also in attendance and captain Hannah Barrett was keen to say thank you for the support.

She added: “I am honored to have captained this side in this competition, and particularly in front of this crowd.  It is great for us to see all of the support that is now coming our way from both key figures at the club and SET and also from the Girls Centre of Excellence.

“We are once again moving forward and it is great for us to put in a performance like that and for the Girls that will be the future of the Ladies set up to witness it.

“Now we are just looking to finish the season in the top four and we will be relatively pleased with the season and look to challenge again in the new campaign.”

A full match report from the game will follow in due course.

The Ladies will be making an appearance in Middleton Hall at thecentre:mk on Wednesday 16th April from around 10am for anyone who wishes to congratulate them or find out more about and getting involved in women’s football.
