Ladies reach County Cup final

21 February 2017

Amy Gooderham grabbed her first goal for MK Dons Ladies in spectacular fashion, to help the Dons reach the BBFA Women’s County Cup final.

Gooderham was one of three Under-18s who featured in the semi final alongside Tayla Duffy and Zoe Lander, who also played their part in the emphatic 4-0 victory over Maidenhead.

James Honeyman’s side put in a dominant performance to ensure safe passage to their fourth-successive final, with Charly Wright grabbing the first goal of the game in the first half.

The goals then started to flow for the Dons. Kerry Newman doubled the lead just after the restart before Gooderham followed that up with an impressive lob from 25 yards.

Recent signing Lauren Goodier then rounded off a commanding performance by tapping home a cross late in the game.

The Dons started the tie brightly, instantly putting Maidenhead on the back-foot from the start of the game. Despite this start and carving out chances, the Dons could not take the lead straight away and remained patience in their build up.

The breakthrough, though, came near the 30-minute mark, as Wright found herself in enough space to hit the ball on the half volley into the left side of the goal.

The Dons were unable to extend the lead before the half-time break despite several opportunities but they wasted no time in doing so in the second half.

Moments after the restart, Wright worked the ball down the wing before knocking the ball to an overlapping Sammy Gillings. Gillings then pulled the ball back, firing it towards the back post where an alert Newman slotted the ball home to make it 2-0.

In full control of the game, Gooderham then scored a memorable first goal for the senior team to make it 3-0 – from 25 yards out she perfectly lobbed the goalkeeper to make the Dons’ lead a comfortable one.

The Dons continued to keep the pressure on Maidenhead, not allowing the Magpies to attempt a comeback.

Their last goal of the game came courtesy of Goodier, who calmly tapped home a cross to make it 4-0, moments after the Dons had hit the post.

Speaking after the game, James Honeyman was proud of his team’s cup success and aware of his side’s current momentum.

He said: “Momentum has been with us for a long while, and now we have a cup final to play.

“We have been keeping clean sheets, scoring goals and feel like we can beat anybody on our day.”

The Dons will face Chesham United in the final of the BBFA Women’s County Cup, as Honeyman and his side aim to win the trophy for the fourth year running.
