DonDeal: Maguire moves to Milton Keynes

Promotion-winning centre-back joins MK Dons...

MK Dons are delighted to announce the signing of defender Laurence Maguire following the expiration of his contract at Chesterfield.

The talented centre-back joins the Dons after winning promotion to League One while on loan at Crawley Town last season.

The 27-year-old now becomes MK Dons' third summer signing, subject to League and FA clearance, joining Connor Lemonheigh-Evans and Luke Offord at Stadium MK.

A product of Chesterfield’s academy, the central defender made his first-team debut in 2016 against Wolves U23s in the EFL Trophy.

He would then spend time out on loan AFC Fylde in 2017, gaining valuable experience in the National League North.

Upon returning to Chesterfield the defender became a valuable asset to the Spireites, racking up 167 appearances in total, as well as contributing nine goals from defence.

While playing in Derbyshire, Maguire also represented England C, the team that represents England at non-League level.

In August 2023 the centre-back signed for Crawley Town on loan until January, a deal that would later be extended until the end of the season.

Maguire would feature prominently for the Reds, totalling 39 appearances in a promotion-winning season while also contributing three goals.

On making the move to MK Dons, Laurence said, "It's been fabulous really, it's something that as soon as I spoke to the manager I wanted to get done as soon as possible, it's been a whirlwind over the last three weeks after the playoff final, but yeah I'm so delighted to get it done and be at this fantastic football club."

When describing himself as a footballer, Laurence said, "I'm first and foremost a defender, I like to keep clean sheets, but obviously coming into this club I'd like to say I'm a possession-based centre-half. I'm obviously coming from Crawley and it's a very similar style of play so I'm hoping I can fit straight in."

On what he wants to achieve this season, the centre-back said, "I had a meeting with Mike last week and we had a really positive chat about the way we want to play and the intention of what we want to do this year, there's only one target and that is to get promoted."

On making Maguire his third signing of the summer, MK Dons Head Coach Mike Williamson said, "Laurence is a hugely talented defender. As a centre-back, he possesses all the physical qualities you need to succeed at this level. He's also very composed on the ball with a sharp footballing brain. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do in an MK Dons shirt."
