The career thus far of MK Dons’ first signing of the January 2024 window…

Mkdons.com takes a look back at the career thus far of the first January appointment, Stephen Wearne.

The midfielder started his footballing career within Newcastle’s youth ranks before joining Middlesborough’s Academy, where he would later sign his first professional contract in 2019.

Two years later, Wearne would see his professional debut following his transfer to Sunderland. Representing the Black Cats, Wearne fired home the game-winning goal during a 2-1 victory over Lincoln City in the EFL trophy.

Following his debut delight at Sunderland, the now 23-year-old saw a loan move to National League side Torquay United, where he produced a further three goals in 14 appearances for The Gulls during the 2021/22 season.

The young player then joined Sky Bet League Two outfit Grimsby Town in the second senior permanent move of his career so far. A month after his transfer, at just 21-years-old, Wearne scored his first goal for the Mariners in a 4-0 triumph over Crewe Alexandra.

Wearne then returned to his former club Torquay United on a second loan move to the National League before signing terms for Mike Williamson’s Gateshead side in March 2023.

The attacking midfielder would score five goals in 14 appearances under Williamson’s rule, including a hat-trick against Ebbsfleet.

Despite Mike Williamson’s departure to become the Head Coach of MK Dons, Wearne continued his impressive form for the Heed, which saw him honoured with the National League Player of the Month award for November 2023.

The former Gateshead goal-scorer has contributed 11 successful strikes so far this season before earning his return to league Two and reuniting with Williamson as a now MK Dons player.
