MK Dons Women bow out of the League Cup competition…

31 October 2023

MK Dons Women are eliminated from the FAWNL League Cup following a narrow 1-0 defeat against Portsmouth at Fairfields Sports Hub.

A flawless run of results throughout the month of October had come to an end after the cup tie against Pompey, which saw Emma Jones’ goal in the 75th minute separate the sides at full-time.

Both teams are currently competing at the top-end of the FAWNL Southern Premier Division League table, which was demonstrated during the game as either side found it difficult to break down the other for the majority of the fixture.

Charlie Bill’s Women and the visitors had both accumulated a six-game unbeaten run across all competitions prior to this contest, but an elimination game meant that only one side would further that streak.

The opening stages of the clash saw a strong start for the Dons Women, who created multiple chances. Alas, the lack of conviction during their early advances would ultimately prove costly for the home side.

Following a resolute defensive display within the first-half of action, the Blues then came out the blocks quickly with the intention to stun their counterpart during the second stage of the fixture.

Chloe Sansom was called upon multiple times to spurn the efforts of the opposition, but there was only so much the Captain could do in her efforts to prevent Portsmouth from opening the scoring.

On the 75-minute mark, Emma Jones had broken the deadlock as her headed attempt found the back of the net to grant the travelling team a late advantage.

Charlie Bill’s team didn’t fault in their strong display to fight until the final whistle. But ultimately, they couldn’t acquire the leveller they had been searching for.

Although eliminated from the tournament, MK Dons Women can surely be proud of their October run – which saw the team victorious in four out of their five matches played.
