MK Dons Women triumph over league leaders…

9 October 2023

MK Dons Women stump the league leader’s seven-game unbeaten run as they travelled to Hashtag United in their previous FAWNL Southern Premier Division League clash.

An enthralling victory on the road saw the Dons Women return to winning ways within their league campaign after besting Hashtag United by two goals to nil.

Prior to the nail-biting affair, Charlie Bill’s Women had not seen success within their previous three matches. However, fortunes would change during the trip to Parkside Stadium.

At the time of the game, the current first-place holders opened the scoring when Grace Gillard stepped up to convert a spot-kick rewarded to the hosts just 12 minutes into the tie. 1-0

The home side started the fixture with confidence which reflected within their display on the field, much like any team who had recently acquired a seven-game unbeaten streak.

Although the team suffered an early hit, there was still a great amount of time to turn the score-line around and shock the top-of-the-table opposition.

MK Dons did exactly that, and responded to their setback on the 30-minute mark through Emily Wilson. A great move down the left of the field opened up the opportunity for a cross into the box, which located the head of Wilson, whose bullet-header left Hashtag’s ‘keeper no chance of stopping it. 1-1

The game was brought level, which remained unchanged as the match had reached the conclusion of the first-half.

The second 45 minutes of action would prove vital for either side within the skirmish. Tags continued to battle on their home ground in the hope to sustain their unbeaten record, whereas Dons sought to take home at least a share of the spoils from the FAWNL clash.

Five minutes following the restart, MK Dons Women had gained the lead and showered United in fear of seeing their first defeat of the season.

An indirect free-kick was awarded to the travelling team, who used the set-piece to their advantage. The ball was rolled across to Laura Mitchell on the edge of the box, and the Dons’ top goal-scorer within the current campaign made no mistake when she set her sights for goal. 2-1

Mitchell rifled a shot into the top corner of the net which allowed Charlie Bill’s side to erupt in celebration as the objective to disrupt Hashtag’s successive six-game league winning streak seemed ever-more possible.

However, with 35 minutes of the match still yet to play, MK Dons had a lot of hard work ahead to accomplish their goal.

The hosts continued to get frustrated as each of their advances were spurned by a determined Dons defence, who stood strong against every attack that came their way.

A resolute defensive display was carried out until the final whistle of the game, which confirmed MK Dons Women’s 2-1 victory against Hashtag United at the Parkside Stadium.
