Gilbey: Changing room accountability

Alex Gilbey shared an honest assessment following the defeat against Gillingham…

MK Dons Captain Alex Gilbey shared an honest assessment with the press following a 2-1 defeat against Gillingham at the MEMS Priestfield Stadium.

The Dons currently suffer a seven-game winless streak following their previous result. When asked about the recent Sky Bet League Two fixture, Gilbey said:

“It’s the same story every week, individual mistakes are costing us and it’s not good enough. The lads all have to look at themselves, as a changing room, and as a man and hold their hands up, but I don’t think we’re doing that enough.

“It’s easy to blame the Gaffer, but at the end of the day we’re the ones making those mistakes. I can’t think back and recall a good goal that we’ve conceded, they’ve all been horrific.

“I think we need to take it on the chin now and be accounted for because it’s sink or swim.”

The midfielder continued “I don’t even know where we are in the league at the moment, but it’s embarrassing.

“We have an objective this season, and it’s unacceptable how we’re so far below that. All the lads have to look ourselves in the mirror and say ‘you know what? I don’t think I’m giving enough.’

“I think it’s an easy way out to blame the Manager, but he doesn’t tell us to go out there and make mistakes every week or cost goals every week. As a collective unit, we need to cut this out.”

After suffering a two-goal blow the travelling team saw a spark of hope through Ellis Harrion’s header, which not only opened his MK Dons account but also halved the deficit with 8 minutes plus injury time left to play.

However, the Dons were unable to snatch a share of the spoils which resulted in their fifth league loss of the season so far. The number eight explained “We can’t become a team that’s good for a period of time then die a death.

“We can’t decide when we’re two nil down to then have a go because good teams won’t let you back into the game. From top to bottom as a changing room, as a unit, we’ve got to fix the problem as soon as possible.”
