Alexander: Positive signs in Saddlers performance

Head Coach Graham Alexander reflects on his side's draw with Walsall at the Poundland Bescot Stadium...

Graham Alexander is seeing positive signs that things are beginning to turn for his MK Dons side.

Alexander’s men were held to a 0-0 draw by Walsall in midweek as their search for an elusive Sky Bet League Two victory goes on, but a dominant display at the Poundland Bescot Stadium gives the MK Dons Head Coach confidence that results are right around the corner.

“We can feel it coming,” he said in his post-match press conference after Tuesday’s game. “The boys are pleased with what they’ve put out tonight – they see us keep a clean sheet, dominate another game and we know that results will follow if we keep playing like that.

“I thought the players were excellent tonight, carrying on from the performance on Saturday. We were solid defensively, certainly the back three were superb, and we had some really good chances, which we should take.

“But, positively, the players were getting in good positions and the commitment to the game was great. I don’t do for mistakes or missed chances, what makes me angry is a lack of effort and commitment and I didn’t see any of that from the team.

“I’m content but we know where we need to turn that dial up a little bit to give us the opportunity to get wins from our good performances.

“Scoring the goals is the hardest thing to do in football but we’ve got more than enough attacking talent to score the number of goals we did at the start of the season. We’ll keep working but I know if we keep putting that effort, we’ll score the amount of goals that we need to be successful.”

One of MK Dons’ standout performers against the Saddlers was centre-back Anthony Stewart, who was withdrawn at half-time against Harrogate Town but bounced back with a display in the West Midlands which drew praise from his Head Coach afterwards.

Alexander commented: “I didn’t take him off (against Harrogate) because he missed a couple of things, it’s because we weren’t doing any defending. We had all of the ball and Tucks’ passing range would give us an extra attacking option.

“I explained that to him and when I made the change, he went round and shook everybody’s hands and wished them luck for the second half – that’s the character he is.

“They had the big guy up front tonight and he is a handful. We left him one-on-one at times but that’s because we trust him and he delivered. Stewey was excellent tonight.

“The base that the whole back three gave us, allowed the boys to go and express themselves and create the chances they did.”
