Starting his journey in non-league football before the recent signing at Stadium MK, mkdons.com takes a look at the career of newly signed goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray.
MacGillivray began his profession between the sticks for non-league side Harrogate Railway Athletic in 2011, a year which also saw his first career move to Stalybridge Celtic. The ‘keeper made his return to Harrogate after he signed a deal with Harrogate Town in 2012, a move that saw Craig emerge as Town’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Following his time with Harrogate, MacGillivray signed a two-year deal with Walsall, who at the time were battling within the third tier of English football. The shot-stopper conjured a total of 19 appearances following his debut against Oldham Athletic, which saw the Scotsman sustain a clean sheet in a 2-0 victory.
Once he struck his third consecutive deal within League One, the goalkeeper showcased consistent and effective performances, which saw him rewarded with the ‘Player of the Season’ accolade for the South coast side during the 2020/2021 campaign.
The Scottish shot-stopper surpassed the century milestone for Pompey as he amounted a number of 135 appearances for the club. Craig MacGillivray also added to his feats during his time there, his penalty shoot-out heroics against Sunderland’s Lee Cattermole in the EFL Trophy final saw Portsmouth achieve silverware within the same year he was awarded with ‘Player of the Season’ accolade.
Following a successful spell, the former Pompey number one moved to London where he would join Charlton Athletic ahead of the 2021/22 season. The ‘Keeper’s time at The Valley resulted in 51 appearances where he would sustain a total of 16 clean sheets within that stint.
A year onward, Craig then received a transfer to Burton Albion, his previous club before signing at Stadium MK and becoming Graham Alexander’s third MK Dons player appointment this summer.
