Graham Alexander has provided an update on the recruitment front, reiterating that MK Dons continue to look at options to strengthen the squad.
Since Alexander’s arrival earlier this summer, the Dons have brought in five new faces in the form of Alex Gilbey, Cameron Norman, Craig MacGillivray, Nathan Harness and MJ Williams.
While the new season is fast approaching, the transfer window remains open until the end of August and Alexander is hopeful of bolstering his squad before the deadline.
“There is work to do and it's important we do that,” the MK Dons Head Coach said after Tuesday’s pre-season friendly with Coventry City.
“We’ve got a big squad on numbers but there is a lot of youth in there and potential for the future. I think we need to improve competition for the senior players and improve the physicality of the team.
“I think we can improve in all parts of the pitch. We've got good quality in the first starting 11 but I think we need to add to that, to really raise the standard and competition.
“That’s why we won't just sign anyone that's available. We have to improve the team, like we've done that with the signings so far.”
One player who MK Dons have taken a look at is free-agent defender Tommy Smith, who was involved in Tuesday’s friendly with Coventry City and travelled with the team out to Germany for last week’s training camp.
When asked about Smith and his future with the Club, Alexander said: “He's a little different to what we have in there, in terms of his experience and his voice.
“He's an out-and-out centre-half and we need people who have been there and done it - Tommy is someone who has. There are conversations to be had with him and his representatives.”
