Alexander: Learning from Championship test

Head Coach Graham Alexander reflects on the pre-season friendly with Coventry City...

Graham Alexander will take plenty of learning from MK Dons’ pre-season clash with Sky Bet Championship outfit Coventry City.

Alexander’s Dons made their Stadium MK return on Tuesday evening as they hosted the Sky Blues in their penultimate friendly ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Reflecting on the fixture, which ended in a 5-1 win to the visitors, the MK Dons Head Coach said: “It was a tough game for us but we knew it would be tough. There are bits in there we can take away and use in our league programme.

“There were things in there we could have changed at half-time, if it were a league match, which would have helped us in the game but we wanted to stick to what we're trying to do because that’s what we've been training for.

“There is still a lot of work, on and off the pitch, to do but it’s a process we are going through. It won't happen overnight so we have to have an idea of what the long-term target looks like and the steps we have to take to get there.

“I've seen an improvement from the group and from individuals. Physically, the players are miles better than they were three weeks ago and that’s a big thing. We'll continue to train hard this week, and we'll also start to get more specific in our tactical work towards Wrexham.”

Alexander continued: “Coventry are a fantastic outfit, who were a penalty away from the Premier League. You learn a lot of things in games like this - you see the step up in physicality and intensity.

“If players want to progress in their careers, they saw the type of athlete they have to become and overcome. Coventry, a few years ago, were in the same division we are in and they have made steady progress season on season, since then. We're at the start of that journey.”

MK Dons were without four first-team players on Tuesday, with Matthew Dennis, Mo Eisa, Conor Grant and Dean Lewington all sidelined due to injury. Alexander provided an update on the quartet in his post-match press conference.

“(None of them) are long-term,” he said. “A couple of them will be out for two or three weeks, and we're hoping for a couple to back this week before Northampton.

“It's just par for the course and they'll be back in as quick as they can.”

Those absences did provide an opportunity for some of the younger players in the fold to get minutes on the pitch, including scholars Callum Tripp and Phoenix Scholtz.

“We've got good young players, which we believe in a lot," Alexander said. "They're fit, proactive and have great confidence.

“I believe we've got some cracking young players in there who deserve that opportunity. They're not here out of luck, they've earned it in training.”
