A statistical look at MK Dons' 5-3 victory over Wrexham...

MK Dons secured victory on the opening weekend of the EFL season for the first time since 2018, when they beat Oldham Athletic 2-1 at Boundary Park.

The 5-3 win over Wrexham was MK Dons’ second-biggest margin of victory on opening day, behind only the 4-1 triumph over Rotherham United in the first match of the 2015/16 season. Five goals, however, was most goals scored by a Dons team in their first fixture of a campaign.

MK Dons scored five goals against Wrexham – the first time they have found the net five times in a league fixture since the 5-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle on 30 April 2022.

MK Dons’ first goal of the 2023/24 season was an own goal, scored by Wrexham defender Eoghan O’Connell. That is the second time that has happened in Club history, also occurring in the Dons’ 4-2 victory over Gillingham at the start of the 2014/15 campaign.

Graham Alexander won his first match as MK Dons Head Coach, becoming the seventh man in charge of the Club to secure victory in their opening game.

Jonathan Leko scored twice, becoming only the second player in Club history to net a brace in the opening game of the season. Izale McLeod also found the net twice against AFC Bournemouth back in August 2005.

Craig MacGillivray, Cameron Norman, MJ Williams, Tommy Smith, Ashley Hunter and Phoenix Scholtz all made their MK Dons debuts against Wrexham, taking the total number of players to feature in a competitive fixture for the Club to 332.

Alex Gilbey made his first appearance for MK Dons since the fixture with Doncaster Rovers at Stadium MK on 7 March 2020, a space of 1,247 days.

Phoenix Scholtz became the first MK Dons Academy graduate to make their professional league debut for the Club since Brooklyn Ilunga on 7 August 2021.

Ethan Robson made his 50th MK Dons appearance against Wrexham, marking the occasion with an assist for Jonathan Leko’s third goal. Robson needs one more start to register 100 for his professional career.

Craig MacGillivray is one shy of reaching 200 EFL appearances and starts in his professional career.

Jack Tucker has moved to within one game of making his 50th appearance for MK Dons.
