Alexander: More to come

Head Coach Graham Alexander reflects on his side's 2-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers at Stadium MK...

Graham Alexander insists there is plenty more to come from his MK Dons side, even despite them ending the month of August at the top of the Sky Bet League Two table.

Alexander’s Dons made it four wins from five to start the 2023/24 season courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers at Stadium MK.

The triumph saw them move above Gillingham on goal difference and means they will begin September as the division’s early pace-setters.

“It's about the points tally at this stage,” the MK Dons Head Coach said when asked about the team’s league standing in his post-match press conference.

“We've got 12 (points) out of 15 which is a good start. League positions will only be important at the end of the season and, in the meantime, it’s important we keep adding to the tally and giving the supporters something to get behind.”

Reflecting on his team’s display against Doncaster, Alexander said: “I'm delighted for the players again - it's a great three points.

“I thought it was a carbon copy of the Tranmere (Rovers) game - we deservedly took the lead and were winning at half-time but we let them back in it.

“You expect a change from them - we were 2-0 up and they had to change something. I thought we over-complicated things. In possession we made some poor decisions, tried to do too much and turned it over too often.

“We have to work on our attacking play when we're in the lead like that, to relieve pressure. It's not supposed to be a 40-minute defending session, we still have to offer a threat in the final third.

“Sometimes we have to be humble and simple - keep doing what we were doing to get us in the lead. It's something we are working on but we have to make better decisions all over the pitch.

“We're a work in progress, there will always be improvements to make. If we're winning games along the way, it makes life a lot easier.”

“We had to patch up the team and get it over the line, which we did. I'm delighted for the players again - it's a great three points.”

Both Dons goals came courtesy of defenders, with Daniel Harvie finishing off from close-range before Warren O’Hora headed home from Dawson Devoy’s cross.

“We don't want to rely on any individual to win games in a defensive or attacking manner,” Alexander said. “We'll look to create numerous opportunities and avenues to score.

“Dan arrived at the back post with a great finish, and Warren scored a similar one to the one he scored in pre-season here. It’s good that we have goal threats throughout the team.”

One negative for Alexander and MK Dons was the sight of top scorer Mo Eisa limping off late in the second half. The Head Coach provided an update on his striker in his post-match press conference.

“Mo was struggling. He wanted to give it another five minutes and I could see he was trying but he was limping.

“We needed 11 fit players out there to ensure we won that game and Brook has been training exceptionally hard and was ready for his opportunity.

“It's a little bit sore just under his heel but he's in the best hands.”

Graham Alexander's MK Dons turn their attention to the EFL Trophy as they take on Chelsea Under-21s this Tuesday evening at Stadium MK.
