Manning: Improvements and positives

Head Coach Liam Manning reflects on Saturday's Emirates FA Cup tie with Portsmouth...

Liam Manning saw improvements from his MK Dons side in their Emirates FA Cup tie with Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

Manning’s Dons exited the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday after they were beaten 3-2 by Pompey, despite dominating their hosts in terms of possession (58/42) and shots (11/7).

With a spirited performance arguably deserving of more, Manning was positive in his post-match assessment.

“We're disappointed because we wanted to win and progress, but the bigger picture is there was so much to take from that game,” the Head Coach told the media afterwards.

“I was disappointed with our behaviour last week against Barnsley, but you saw that improved today - we had the attitude and drive from us that has to underpin any performance.

“We're, of course, extremely disappointed with the manner of the goals we conceded - you can't give away cheap goals like that - but there were so many good aspects that I'm focusing on taking the positives into next week.

“After Portsmouth started well for 15 minutes, we shifted momentum back to us and we looked really dangerous on the attack. We built well throughout the game, had good control in the middle third.

“The first goal was a really good counter-attack. The two lads linked and Darragh (Burns) showed a lot of composure to score. The second goal was a really good team goal, with the build-up down the left allowing Mo (Eisa) to do what Mo does best.”

Manning added: “I have mixed emotions, as the lads do too because there were so many positives to take from the performance. This does allow us to shift our focus back onto the league, which is paramount at the moment.”
