Matt Smith could be heading to the FIFA World Cup this winter after Wales booked their place at the tournament with a 1-0 win over Ukraine.

Wales beat Ukraine in Cardiff on Sunday to secure a place at the FIFA World Cup finals for the first time since 1958. The FIFA World Cup 2022 is scheduled to take place in Qatar from 21 November to 18 December.

While Smith wasn’t involved in Sunday’s triumph, the MK Dons midfielder did earn his 16th international cap earlier in the week when he played 90 minutes in their UEFA Nations League fixture with Poland.

Against a full-strength home side, Wales put in a commendable display but were, in the end, beaten 2-1 in Wroclaw in their opening match of the competition.

Smith could have three more opportunities to impress in the coming days as Wales play three times in less than a week, starting with a meeting with The Netherlands in Cardiff on Wednesday.

Wales then host Belgium this Saturday before travelling to Rotterdam next Tuesday for their fifth and final international fixture this month.
