Watson: I promised a goal to my mother

Defender Tennai Watson reflects on the 2-0 victory over Charlton Athletic...

24 February 2022

Tennai Watson worked himself onto the scoresheet in Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Charlton Athletic – something he told his mother he would do prior to the game!

Watson latched onto a Conor Coventry pass to net his second goal of the season and give MK Dons a half-time lead at The Valley – a lead they would double in the second period through another wing-back, Kaine Kesler Hayden, who registered his maiden goal for the Club.

“I’m buzzing,” Watson said in his post-match interview with iFollow MK Dons. “The main thing is the three points but I am just happy I could contribute – that doesn’t really happen often!

“Every game mum says that I’m going to score but (on Tuesday) I was saying to her that I had a feeling that this could be a game I could get on the scoresheet and then it happens. She’ll be buzzing with that!

“We were talking after the game how it happened to be both full backs scoring. I'm buzzing for Kaine as well – it’s really good that he's on the score sheet and obviously for myself as well.”

Tuesday’s win kept MK Dons in third place in the Sky Bet League One table and stretched their unbeaten run to seven games – form they will be looking to maintain this weekend when they take on Bolton Wanderers at Stadium MK.

“You’ve to got enjoy the moment and you’ve got to be happy after wins but, at the same time, the game is done,” the 24-year-old added. “We’ve got to be ready for (Bolton) – it’s all eyes on that.”
