Lewie: Dons heading into the right direction

Skipper optimistic about MK Dons' progress...

27 May 2021

Dean Lewington believes MK Dons’ arrow is firmly pointing in the direction following a campaign of sustained improvement.

The Dons improved on their lowly finish in 2019/20 to consolidate themselves in Sky Bet League One last term while also flirting with a top-six push at times during a second-half of the season in which they boasted some of the best form in the division.

Lewington, who will return for a 18th season in an MK Dons shirt, hopes that progress can continue in 2021/22.

“We certainly progressed through the year,” Lewington said in his end-of-season interview with iFollow MK Dons. “We had a positive end to the season and from January we were one of the better teams in the league –that’s exciting and shows good promise.

“It’s definitely pointing in the right direction. We lost three massive cogs in the team from last year in Rhys, Alex and Callum but from that, it’s born a new team and the signings that we have made have been excellent, as well as the players we’ve promoted from the youth team.

“We just need to keep on improving and keep on moving. We’ve set a higher bar than last year and that’s how we’ve got to approach it - hopefully we can do that.”

When the Dons return to Sky Bet League One in August, they hope to do so in front of supporters once again, having played behind-closed-doors for the majority of the 2020/21 season.

“It was a crazy year and it’s one that I didn’t really enjoy without the fans there,” the MK Dons captain said. “It’s also a real a shame for them that they haven’t been able to see the progress the team have made.

“Being possession-based, home fans, when we’re playing away, will urge their team to press and we’ve suffered from that – a packed stadium won’t allow their team to just sit behind the ball, especially if it’s a tight game. That should benefit us.

“We’ve just missed that feeling and connection that we’ve had with the fans. We can’t wait to have them back.”
