Russ calls for a strong finish

MK Dons boss looks ahead to the final nine games of the season...

26 March 2021

Russell Martin is setting just one target for his MK Dons between now and the end of the season – finish as strong as possible.

Martin’s men head into their final nine games of the 2020/21 season sitting 13th in the Sky Bet League One table, five points adrift of the play-off spots and 17 points clear of the bottom four.

They welcome fifth-placed Doncaster Rovers to Stadium MK on Saturday knowing a win will move them to within three points of Donny, but Martin isn’t getting carried away, and remains focused on making as much improvement as possible before 8 May.

“We have to be relentless with the guys, and not get comfortable accepting where we're at or what we've done,” the Dons boss said in his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s clash with Doncaster Rovers.

“We've reached a tally where we can play with a little less fear but we want to keep pushing and see how many points we can get. We've not got a points target - we're only focussed on improving from game-to-game – but we want to finish as high as possible.

“Obviously, if we won nine out of nine then we’d give ourselves a right chance! But, we're a work in progress and we just have to try and win as many games as possible - as obvious as that sounds.

“We're trying to prepare and learn for next season - the problems we'll face, what we need to help these guy, how we can sharpen up our processes in training. We're trying to plot and plan to finish strongly.”

On Saturday’s opponents, Doncaster, Martin said: “I really like them. They're a good League One side and play some really good football - that has been them traditionally for a long time.

“We've watched them recently and we've been impressed. It was a tough game at their place earlier in the season and they've done really well since, and I think it will be a good football game.

They've got a new manager but he's been there for a long time I played against him over the years and we've had a few battles. I look forward to having a battle with him again.”
