Simon motivated to help take MK Dons forward

Performance Director on his new role at Stadium MK...

3 June 2021

Simon Crampton is about to begin his 16th season with MK Dons and the newly appointed Performance Director is as motivated as ever to try and bring success to Stadium MK.

Crampton, who joined the Club in 2006 as an Academy physio, was announced as the Club’s first Performance Director last week – a role which will see him, along with Liam Sweeting and Russell Martin, oversee the football operation at Stadium MK.

“It’s a role that I’ve been preparing myself for,” he told iFollow MK Dons in an exclusive interview. “I’m really motivated, and I can’t wait to get going.

“Kudos to Andrew Cullen who has done an amazing job, changing the infrastructure and the way we work here at MK Dons. Over the last few years, I’ve been working closely with Andy and I’ll be hoping to continue some of the good work he’s done.

“Things were going well as they were but Andy leaving has provided us an opportunity to change things, not because they were bad, but in a way that can improve us and help take us to where we want to go.

“Along with Liam, we had a long chat with the Chairman about the way we saw things moving forward and between the three of us we’ve come up with a structure that we’re all excited about and motivated to take forward – and one that can hopefully MK Dons forward too.

“We will be looking to create a high-performance culture across the Club, providing a basis for everyone to be the best they can be, which will ultimately have a positive impact on what we do on the field.

“We’ve got tough and challenging times ahead of us but it feels like we have a lot of momentum, with the way in which we finished the season - that’s exciting and we want to capitalise on that.”

He added: “I’m going into my 16th season and there is a reason why I’m still here – that’s my love for the Football Club and my ambition for where I want it to go. You feel like you are really part of something when you are here.”

When MK Dons kick-off their 2021/22 campaign in August, they hope to do so in front of supporters after a season in which most of the matches were played behind closed doors.

Crampton believes that having fans back inside Stadium MK will provide a real boost.

“The fans are going to be huge,” he said. “They are so important but particularly with the way in which we play. We want the fans to be able to come and enjoy that.

“Having fans back in for that first game of the season would be the icing on the cake for us all. We want to achieve things together and ultimately maximise the potential of this Football Club.”
