Russ reflects on Posh result

MK Dons were beaten 3-0 by Peterborough United in their first league match of 2021...

Russell Martin felt Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Peterborough United was a harsh reflection of his side’s performance at the Weston Homes Stadium.

MK Dons limited high-flying Posh to only 35% of possession and six shots on goal, but were ultimately punished by a clinical United attack.

“I think 3-0 was a harsh score-line on the players,” Martin said in his post-match interview, following the loss in Cambridgeshire. “I am disappointed with the score-line, of course, but not with the performance.

“To concede so early, against a team with the most potent front three in the league, it made it really difficult for us. I'm disappointed with the way we started the game, and disappointed with the goals.

“There was a lot which disrupted us before the game. No Richard Keogh and Warren O'Hora wasn't quite fit enough either. We had a make-shift defence with people playing out of position, and then Andrew Surman got injured very early on too.

“I don't think it was a 3-0 game, though. We limited them, but when we did give them something, they punished us.

“It's nowhere near the most disappointing performance we’ve had this season. We were still fighting in the 87th minute and we dominated the second halt. But, it is the most disappointing score-line.”

Martin added: “After disappointing results, we have always bounced back really well. Tuesday is an opportunity to bounce back really quickly and regardless of who we are able to put out there because of injuries and departures, I will trust the players to go out there and deliver.”
