Joe Mason and Andrew Fisher draw compliments for their roles in the 3-1 win over Fleetwood Town...

At opposite ends of the pitch, Joe Mason and Andrew Fisher both played a crucial part in MK Dons’ 3-1 victory over Fleetwood Town at Stadium MK.

Mason stole the headlines early with a hat-trick inside the opening 27 minutes – all three strikes terrific in their own right – while Andrew Fisher pulled off a number of vital saves, particularly in the second half to stem a Fleetwood fightback.

Asked about both performances in his post-match press conference, Russell Martin was full of praise.

“Joe [Mason] has got so much quality and I have so much belief in him,” Martin said about his number 20.

“It's always been about getting his body 100 per cent right, which we haven’t been able to do to his point. He's got some minutes in him recently, though, and tonight he was outstanding.

“His finishes – I'm not sure many strikers are able to do what he did, especially the one on his weaker foot. They were just outstanding.

“We need more of that from Joe, and we need him on the pitch more, but I'm really pleased for him tonight.”

On his goalkeeper, Martin commented: “Fish was great. Everyone can see how comfortable and confident he is with the ball at his feet but tonight you could see he's a top goalie when it comes to making saves too.

“The beauty of being a keeper in our team is that you don’t have a lot to do most of the time. Tonight, we've used him far too much but he’s made some fantastic saves. I said to the boys afterwards that they needed to thank Fish because he was called on far too much.

“He's showing why he's number one at the moment. Lee Nicholls was excellent in the cup games and is breathing down his neck for sure, but Fisher deserves to be playing at the moment and he justified that tonight.”
