Louis Thompson wants MK Dons to put things right this Saturday, when they welcome Sunderland back to Stadium MK.
The Dons were beaten 3-0 by the Black Cats in their Papa John’s Trophy Quarter-Final tie on Tuesday, but Russell Martin’s men have an opportunity to respond at the weekend when the two sides meet once again - this time in Sky Bet League One.
“Losing 1-0 or 3-0, it doesn't matter - a loss is a loss,” Thompson said in the aftermath of Tuesday’s defeat at Stadium MK. “We have to use it as fuel to put it right at the weekend.
“We dominated large parts of the game but we had a bit of bad fortune for the goal, which put us on the back foot.
“I felt like we were in it (up until the second goal) and were in their box plenty of times.”
Thompson continued: “We have to put it into perspective – we had an extremely young back line at the end. It's not just on them, though, we have a responsibility to protect them.
“The amount of changes is not an excuse either, as we've all been around each other for long enough, and the players coming in were more than capable. The team that was out there had enough to go and win the game.
“It's a cup we wanted to do well in and we were only a couple of games from Wembley so it's frustrating. As a team we just have to learn from these types of games. We have to demand more from each other and propel ourselves forward from now.
“We've improved massively of late - the wins we've amassed in the last few weeks have been really important. It’s onwards and upwards now.
“The derby at the weekend showed how far we've come. I think we're learning quickly, and we've now got a squad who can really push on.”
