Ethan Laird and Andrew Surman are two players at opposite ends of their careers, but both are contributing on the pitch for MK Dons.
The pair shone in Tuesday’s terrific 4-1 win over Rochdale, with Laird involved in the opening goal and Surman running the show from the centre of the park.
With Laird just 19 and Surman aged 34, the duo require different forms of management from Russell Martin, but the boss is enjoying the opportunity to work with both players at Stadium MK.
“Firstly, Ethan is a great character. He has real enthusiasm and brings a great energy. He has a real confidence in his ability too.
“We speak to Man United quite a bit about him and his development. We are really honest about where Ethan needs to improve and where he’s getting better with every game.
“Defensively, especially, he’s giving us a lot more and turning into someone we can really rely on. He’s robust, physical and will keep improving in that regard.
“I’ve no doubt he’ll be an important player for us and that he will be a really good player in future. We’re really lucky to have him.”
Martin continued: “Surs was our best player on Tuesday - he was outstanding. He gives players so much confidence because they really trust him.
“He’s put in some excellent performances for us this season and he’s a great example to the young players with his willingness to still learn and take on detail.
“He’s a brilliant footballer but a brilliant guy too - he’s always positive. He’s certainly someone who has a lot to offer.”
