Russ: Let’s keep building momentum

Russell Martin wants his MK Dons side to continue building momentum, following an excellent week on the road which culminated in Saturday’s 1-0 win at second-placed Hull City.

Martin’s men followed up their 4-1 midweek victory over Rochdale by defeating the title-chasing Tigers, with Scott Fraser’s 80th-minute penalty proving the difference in an entertaining affair at the KCOM Stadium.

The two results last week have faulted the Dons up to 13th in the Sky Bet League One table and moved them to within just six points of the play-off places. Martin, though, isn’t getting carried away and is focused solely on maintaining the winning feeling for as long as possible.

“We're looking forwards – that's all,” Martin told iFollow MK Dons when asked whether or not he is now looking up the table rather than down. “Hopefully we can keep this feeling rolling because winning is the best feeling in football.

“The target for this season was always improvement and we've now got more points than we did after 35 games last season. We're also trying to give ourselves as much breathing space so we can go and enjoy days like today.

“We have a bit of momentum and we all want to keep that up. We still have a lot of work to do, but we want to work, we want to improve - that has to remain the focus for us.

“We've still got guys who are still very new to this team, who haven't played a lot of games. There's a lot of improvement and growth to make - we have to be that greedy and want more.”

On Saturday’s result, in particular, Martin said: “I'm really pleased, really happy and I'm so proud of the players. As a performance, it was outstanding - we were in control for most of the game.

“It's not lost on us how much bravery it takes to come to a team like Hull, with one of the best home records in the league and create chances, and limit them to very little and look really dangerous all afternoon.”

Scott Fraser was Saturday’s match-winner, keeping his cool from the penalty spot to slot home his ninth goal of the campaign with just 10 minutes to play.

“If there's one guy you want to take a penalty with confidence and belief, it would be him!” Martin said of his number 10. “Everyone here knows he'll score when he's in that position.

“What's pleasing for me, though, is the hard work he puts in out of possession. Scott knows how important his team-mates are to him, as they know how important he is too.”
