Sweeting: We will make the right decision for the Club

Sporting Director discusses the plan to replace Russell Martin at Stadium MK...

2 August 2021

The search for a new MK Dons manager is underway, with Sporting Director Liam Sweeting focused on making the ‘right decision’ for the Football Club.

It was announced on Sunday evening that Russell Martin had left Stadium MK to take up the Head Coach position at Swansea City – a decision which has left the Dons without a manager heading into their Sky Bet League One opener against Bolton Wanderers this Saturday.

While frustrated and disappointed with the timing of Martin’s exit, Sweeting has already turned his focus to finding a replacement – a search that will take as long as necessary to find the ideal man for the job.

“We're frustrated and disappointed but football is a relentless business,” Sweeting told iFollow MK Dons on Sunday. “Our challenge now is to move on.

“Frustration is the word because, at a time when we were excited to have the fans back for Tottenham and for our first competitive game, we had to deal with the speculation which ended in an approach for our football management team 24 hours before that game.

“Russ indicated he'd like to speak to (Swansea City) and while we left those discussions until after the game, ultimately he's taken up that opportunity.

“I won't sit on the disappointment longer than this interview because we've got to move forwards and we will now begin the process to recruit a new manager.

“We've got a week until our first League One game so the challenge is tough but we'll have a short-term plan in place and the players will continue to train ahead of the game.

“I've got full confidence in the guys here and the new structure we put in place safeguards us for this situation so we will be able to prepare properly for this game.”

Sweeting added: “I think the fans should have confidence in the decisions that have been made at this Club recently by me, Simon (Crampton) and the Chairman.

“I would hope they feel confident in us to run this process smoothly. It will take as long as it takes and we will make the right decision for the Club.”

Liam Sweeting is also set to speak with the media on Tuesday morning. The full press conference will be available to view on iFollow MK Dons shortly thereafter.
