MK Dons Women seal unbeaten pre-season

Dons edge West Brom in nine-goal thriller...

9 August 2021

MK Dons Women concluded their pre-season with a thrilling 5-4 victory over West Bromwich Albion.

On an afternoon where only 13 players were available due to 10 first-team squad members missing, Charlie Bill’s team quickly went two goals down.

However, seven minutes in, one of the Dons’ trialist found the net with a lovely finish from a tight angle which halved the deficit.

A number of big chances fell to the Dons soon after but it was West Brom who extended their advantage before half-time courtesy of a brilliant strike from 20-yards.

The first 15 minutes of the second half passed without too much action but the game was to change with the introduction of Mollie Coupar from the bench on the hour mark. Two minutes after coming on, she found herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, finishing brilliantly into the far corner to make it 3-2.

Just when the Dons thought they had a foothold in the game, West Brom again restored their two-goal advantage. After beating the offside trap, the West Brom midfielder showed excellent composure to finish under Amy Martin in the Dons goal.

With the game entering the final quarter of an hour, there was a lovely moment for RTC graduate Tilly Brown who got her first experience of first-team football. Shortly after, Chez Albert found herself in another one-on-one situation and she too finished expertly to make the game 4-3.

It was Coupar, though, who would turned the game around, latching onto a lovely cross from Hannah Warren and, despite a poor first touch, brilliantly beating the last defender and finding the goal with her left foot.

Then, with five minutes to play, Coupar charged down the West Brom goalkeeper and made contact with the clearance. That saw the ball rebound back towards goal and settle in the back of the net, securing a 5-4 for the Dons.

With pre-season now complete, Charlie Bill’s team turn their attention to their FAWNL Southern Premier Division opener with Southampton this coming Sunday.
