8 April 2021 details the storylines to follow heading into Saturday's Sky Bet League One clash with Ipswich Town at Portman Road...

Bouncing back from Easter Monday
MK Dons fell to their first defeat in five matches on Easter Monday but have a chance to respond this weekend when they visit Portman Road.

Russell Martin’s men have only suffered back-to-back defeats four times this campaign – two of which came during their run of three straight losses last month.

The Dons’ ability to bounce back, and what it could mean for them next season, is something Martin discussed after the reverse to Crewe Alexandra on Monday.

“If we're going to be serious about next season, we have to show we can bounce back quickly,” he said. “We've got a chance on Saturday at a ground they should all be looking forward to playing at.”

A chance to secure League One status
MK Dons could make certain of, at least, third-tier football next season, should they beat Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

Russell Martin’s side are currently 17 points adrift of the bottom four and three more points at the weekend will see them create an insurmountable gap over Bristol Rovers and Wigan Athletic. Both of those teams failing to win would also confirm that.

The Dons would then require two of Swindon Town, Northampton Town (who play Bristol Rovers) or Rochdale to drop points this weekend, to make sure they will finish above at least four teams at the end of the season.

Play-off chasing Tractor Boys
While the Dons still have a chance to sneak into the top six, their opponents, Ipswich Town, are right in the thick of the play-off picture, and will be looking for three valuable points on Saturday to help them in that pursuit.

Since Paul Cook has taken charge at Portman Road, the 54-year-old has breathed new life into the Tractor Boys’ push for promotion.

They are currently three points adrift of sixth-placed Lincoln City, having played a game more than the Imps, and could level things up with a win on Saturday.

Injury concerns
MK Dons saw both Louis Thompson and Cameron Jerome limp out of Monday’s defeat to Crewe and boss Russell Martin didn’t provide an update on their status for this weekend’s game when he met with the media for his pre-match press conference.

So, it remains to be seen whether the pair will be available for the trip to Suffolk or whether they will join Ben Gladwin, Kieran Agard and Jay Bird on the sidelines.

In more positive news, Martin did confirm that midfielder David Kasumu made it through his first game in three months unscathed. He will be pushing for more playing time on Saturday.

Russ visiting “enemy territory”
There will be a little added spice to Saturday’s fixture, with former Norwich City captain Russell Martin making his first managerial trip to Portman Road – home to the Canaries’ bitter rivals, Ipswich Town.

Martin, who made 309 appearances for Norwich, boasted an unblemished record against the Tractor Boys during his playing career, and scored in a 5-1 victory at Portman Road back in 2011 en route to promotion from the Championship.

The manager, when speaking ahead of Saturday’s game, didn’t hide from the fact that, for him, there would be a little extra riding on the match.

“I’m sure a few thousand will tell you it’s more important,” he said in his pre-match press conference.

“We’ll prepare properly as we do with any game but when you play for a club for so long, and they are their biggest rivals – put it this way, if there were fans then I’m sure I would’ve got stick going there.”
