Russ' pride in five-star performance

Manager reflects on the 5-0 win over Swindon Town...

26 April 2021

Russell Martin spoke of his pride in his MK Dons side after their 5-0 victory over Swindon Town at Stadium MK.

The Dons made it three wins on the bounce with a dominant display on Saturday, as four goals from striker Will Grigg and a Scott Fraser penalty saw them move up to ninth in the Sky Bet League One table.

“I'm really proud of the team,” Martin said in his post-match press conference. “I'm really proud of that performance, and they should be too - it's not an unfair scoreline.

“No game is easy at this level, but we made it that way. They didn’t have a shot on target and what I really liked was that we were ruthless and clinical. We are really tough to play against when we have that intensity.

“It's really easy, in games like that, to get bored but we played disciplined football in the second half and I love the fact we didn't come off it. If we want to be a team competing regularly in the top half of the table, that's the mentality you need to have.

“The challenge now is to perform like this regularly. It’s what we want to see from our team. We're just trying to build momentum and make them realise what they're capable of.”

Grigg, understandably, stole the headlines with his four-goal salvo – the first time in his career that he had scored four goals in a single match and also the first time an MK Dons player had done so too.

“He was great today,” Martin said. “We couldn’t praise him enough in the last few weeks and today, he got the goals he deserved. Everyone is so happy for him.

“I don't think anyone can say it's been an unsuccessful loan. He's scored the British record goal for passes, now he's got that accolade as well and I'm sure he's quite high up in Dons' leading scorers as well!”

Russell Martin and MK Dons will look to secure a fourth successive victory on Saturday when they take on Fleetwood Town at their Highbury Stadium.
