Dons keeping short-term focus as they prepare to welcome Crewe

MK Dons face Crewe Alexandra at Stadium MK on Easter Monday...

4 April 2021

MK Dons are keeping a short-term focus, as they look to maximise their points return over the final eight games of the season.

Russell Martin’s men weren’t in action on Good Friday due to Covid issues with Lincoln City but results elsewhere mean they enter Monday’s clash with Crewe Alexandra sitting 12th in the division, six points adrift of the top six.

Despite sixth place being in sight, the Dons have refused to be drawn into a discussion on making a run for play-offs – Goalkeeper Coach Dean Thornton was the latest to insist that the only aim is winning the next game.

“I’ll be honest, we’ve not even mentioned the play offs,” Thornton said in MK Dons’ pre-match press conference ahead of Monday’s visit of Crewe Alexandra.

“If you focus on the play offs you can often lose sight of what’s next. Crewe is next for us and therefore it’s the most important game.

“From 13th to 5th, there’s just five points in it and I hope other teams talk about it and take their eye off the ball.

“Here, it’s game by game. It’s a great run we are on, but there are eight games left with 24 points to play for.”

Monday’s visit of Crewe Alexandra sees the Dons face a side who inflicted one of the most disappointing defeats of their 2020/21 season back in September. Thornton hopes they can put on a better showing this time around at Stadium MK.

“We were disappointed with that game but it was really early on,” Thornton told the media. “I think, of the team that started there, only two started the last game for us.

“Crewe are a very good team, though. Our analyst speaks really highly of them and he loves how they play and their individual players.

“David has done such a good job there, and full credit to him and his team. They did the job on us at their place, but hopefully we can do the job at home.”
