With over 550 professional appearances and 29 international caps to his name - Harry Darling couldn’t ask for better manager to learn from than Russell Martin.
The Gaffer has played at the highest level and earned five promotions throughout his career. Darling, who is in the infancy of his professional career, is hoping to learn as much as he can from his boss.
The 21-year-old admits that he wasn’t at his best against Crewe Alexandra and is hoping to use the performance as a learning curve for the future.
“I don’t think the other day was my best game, I’m learning on the job and Russ has helped me out with every game. I want to get bet better with every match, I want to improve and know what Russ thinks.
“I do believe in my ability and I wouldn’t have joined if I didn't think I can set up. I think the style suits me as a player, Russ and Luke have really helped me develop so it’s a massive credit to them for helping me on and off the pitch.
“I think every footballer wants to play this style, it’s an attractive style of play and really enjoyable to be involved in.”
Sitting in the middle of the Dons’ defence, Darling is handed a big responsibility in orchestrating attacks and driving out from the back. The defender says he enjoys the challenge Martin has placed upon him – and credits the midfielders for making his job easier.
“I think responsibility brings out the best players, it is daunting and it’s different to how I’ve played before but it can only improve me as a player.
“I think Josh and Surs have helped me. We have a good backline that makes me look better as they are so good on the ball. We are working well as a unit at the minute and hopefully, it continues.”
