Russell Martin believes his MK Dons are still a work in progress but that doesn’t mean he isn’t approaching Saturday’s Sky Bet League One opener with the mentality of winning the match.
A busy summer of transfer activity at Stadium MK means the Dons side that face Doncaster Rovers this afternoon will look much different to the one who faced the Yorkshireman at Stadium MK six months ago – the Club’s final game before Lockdown.
With new faces recently in the door, and still a month left to go until the transfer window slams shut, Martin expects more improvement from his side, but the Dons boss still remains confident in the squad’s ability to get off to a successful start this afternoon.
“We’re still a work in progress,” he said in his pre-match press conference ahead of today’s meeting with Donny at the Keepmoat Stadium.
“We’re so early in our process still and we’ve still got so much work to do. There is so much we need to work on and help the players with. But, there were positives on Tuesday night and that gives us loads of positivity going into a big game.
“Regardless, we have to make sure we’re ready for the challenge. It’s a tough start – they are a good team and we had tough games against them last season. We have to make sure we get the players ready to go there.
“I have real belief in them. We can’t guarantee results but what I can guarantee is that we’ll go into it with the mentality of sticking to what we’re about and with the mentality to try and win the game.”
He added “It’s been a long time coming. We’re excited to get back playing.”
