Joe Mason reflects on bittersweet Lincoln City clash

Striker got off the mark in Saturday's defeat...

22 September 2020

Joe Mason opened his account for the season on Saturday afternoon, but says he would give up his goal for three points.

The 29-year-old was handed his first start of the campaign against The Imps and leveled the scoring as he calmly slotted past Alex Palmer.

Michael Appleton’s side, however, won the game thanks to Tom Hopper’s header, condemning MK Dons to their first Sky Bet League One defeat of the season.

“It doesn’t really matter about my goal,” Mason told mkdons.com following the defeat. “First and foremost – it’s about getting the result.

“It’s nice to get off the mark and it’s a weight off my shoulders. I’ve now got that first goal and I can go into the rest of the season looking to add to it.”

Mason says that the way Russell Martin’s side play will see a number of chances fall his way and while the defeat against Lincoln was frustrating, there are positives to take from the clash.

“I know I'm going to get chances in every game, that's positive for me I'm hoping to get a big tally this year.

“It's a difficult one to take because of how we played, especially in the second half. We dominated possession, and that second goal was cheap.

“We have to reassess and look at it again on Monday and see where it went wrong, but coming off the pitch it's tough to take because we deserved something from that game.”
