Russ proud of Wigan response

MK Dons beat Wigan Athletic to secure back-to-back home league wins...

28 October 2020

Russell Martin got the response he wanted from his MK Dons side in their 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic at Stadium MK.

Martin’s men bounced back from successive defeats with a dominant and well-deserved home win over the Latics – a result which lifted them out of the relegation places in Sky Bet League One and up to 17th.

The Dons boss had nothing but praise for his players post-match.

“To a man they were fantastic,” Martin said in his address to the media following the win at Stadium MK. “Some of the football was outstanding.

“I'm really proud of the players for their approach from the outset. We had so much intensity and that's not easy in the current situation we're in. It was a real test of character.

“We made it more difficult for ourselves in the final 10 minutes than we needed to but I totally understand the anxiety and tension when we're so desperate to win.

“I'm not sure it's a feeling of relief but it was nice to finally get what we deserved. Now, we have to keep getting results here and finding a formula to get them away.”

He added: “We've got real trust in the players, both those who are playing and those who are not.

“It's not easy to play this way, especially when there's a lot of people wanting to question us about it. It's how we want to do things, though, and it’s up to us to justify it and performances tonight go a long way in doing that.”
