Russell Martin says playing at Stadium MK will never be the same without the backing of the MK Dons supporters, and hopes they can return as soon as it is deemed safe to do so.

The Dons have been forced to play behind closed doors this season due to the Government’s Covid-19 restrictions, and while Martin is understanding of the reasons behind that decision, he is hoping fans can return to grounds sooner rather than later.

“If it is deemed safe to do so, I’d love to see them back this season,” Martin said in his pre-match press conference.

“It’s certainly not the same without them and it plays such an important part in people’s lives.

“Hopefully we can get this situation under control as soon as possible and then look at getting fans back in.”

In a bid to maintain the connection between the Club and the supporters, MK Dons held a Virtual Fans Forum for Cowshed Season Ticket holders on Monday, providing an opportunity for them to pose questions to the manager, as well as Executive director Andrew Cullen and Richard Keogh.

“We want to keep the connection with the fans going and that was a big part of what we are looking to do,” Martin said.

“When you’re just watching on iFollow it feels really different and it’s really easy to lose a bit of connection with your Club as you’re not going to the game. So, it’s massive we engage with our fans.

“The fans are the most important people at this football club – they’ll be here beyond any player or manager. They are so important to us, I’m glad we could get it done for them.

“It was great to see some familiar faces and it allowed us an opportunity to try and explain where we are going – because they are very much part of the process.

“We’ve got a few more planned in the coming weeks so we’ll continue to try and keep them connected with us.”
