Dons continue to balance short and long-term focus

Russell Martin says MK Dons continue to focus on their short-term goals while still working towards their long-term ambitions.

The Dons sit five points clear of the bottom three in Sky Bet League One heading into their final nine matches, and will want to secure their third-tier status as soon as possible to avoid a nervy finish.

Martin insists the main emphasis for him and his team is on remaining in the division until that is mathematically sealed, but the boss knows the Club must continue in their process of building for the future.

“I’ve said all along that I won't be happy until we're safe and that remains,” Martin said in his pre-match press conference ahead of this weekend’s trip to Oxford United.

“We are here to help the team stay in the league, first and foremost, but also to implement something long term – that’s why I signed the contract that I did to become manager.

“As far as I'm concerned, we go to Oxford on Saturday, and every game thereafter, with both a short-term plan and long-term goal in mind.”
