Boss bemoans lacklustre second-half display

Russell Martin reflects on the defeat to Doncaster Rovers...

9 March 2020

Russell Martin says MK Dons must learn from their second-half display in Saturday’s defeat to Doncaster Rovers.

A 67th-minute goal from Jacob Ramsey saw Martin’s men beaten at Stadium MK for only the second time in eight matches and it left the Dons boss bemoaning a lacklustre final 45 in his post-match press conference.

“In the first half we were excellent, as good as we've been for a long time, but I cannot explain the second half,” Martin said after the game.

“What we spoke about and discussed at half time, we got the opposite which is annoying and frustrating.

“We were playing a good team, and respect to them, they were good in the second half. I can accept losing if we do it our way, but we didn't look like us in the second half. We lacked intensity, which is why Doncaster had some big moments.

“The game comes down to chances – they had a big one and scored, we had a big one at the end, don't score and lose 1-0. If we're not at our best, we need to make sure we don't concede and we, at least, get a point.”

He continued: “We're just really disappointed given how good we've been here.

“When you become a better team, you become a bigger scalp, teams have to respect you a bit more and the fans expect more from you. We've created that for ourselves, we now have to manage that expectation.

“We are where we are and we’re always trying to improve. We've learned from every game, and we know what we want to work on.

“We just lacked a bit in terms of our mentality in the second half, which is not something I've said about this group a lot. We have to make sure it doesn't happen again and hopefully, we'll get a good reaction.”
