Alex Gilbey has been named MK Dons’ Player of the Year for the 2019/20 season, winning the award for the second successive campaign.

Alex Gilbey has been named MK Dons’ Player of the Year for the 2019/20 season, winning the award for the second successive campaign.

The midfielder, who also took home the Goal of the Season honour for his superb solo strike against Gillingham, made 37 appearances this term and contributed seven goals courtesy of five finishes and two assists.

Player of the Year in 2018/19, Gilbey becomes only the second player in the Club’s history to win back-to-back Player of the Year awards, alongside Luke Chadwick (2009/10, 2010/11).

“I’m absolutely chuffed,” the MK Dons number 8 told MKFM during the MK Dons Virtual Awards Night.

“It’s a really proud moment for me and I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who voted for me.

“I’ve absolutely loved my three years at the Club so far. I’ve made a lot of friends of life and I get on well with the fans and the chairman. I’m looking to enjoy next season as well.

“We were in a really good place before this happened and we can’t wait to get back to work. We’re going into next season positive and with real excitement.”

Manager Russell Martin added: “Alex been a really big part of what we’re doing, both on and off the pitch, and I’ve told him how grateful I am for that.

“Some of his performances this season were outstanding, but I still think he has loads more to come and hopefully we’ll get even more out of him this season coming.”

Striker Rhys Healey claimed the Players’ Player of the Year award as well as Top Goalscorer following an excellent first full season at Stadium MK.

Reflecting on the Players’ Player of the Year award, Healey told MKFM: “I’m really happy. It’s an award I’ve always wanted to win and it means everything that my teammates have voted for me.

“I’m looking forward to us getting back. I’ll be going into the season with the mindset of scoring in every game I play and hopefully I can hit the ground running and help the team put points on the board.”

Captain Dean Lewington said of MK Dons’ number 10: “Of course, his goals stand out - he scored a number of goals this season and at crucial times - but it’s also his work-rate and effect on the team.

“When Rhys wasn’t in the team, it coincided with our bad form and it’s no coincidence that when he returned, the results did too. He has that impact on the team and the players around him.”

Fellow forward Sam Nombe was named Young Player of the Year by the MKDSA while Jordan Houghton claimed his second successive Media Personality award.
