Williams: Weekend break allows much-needed rest

23 January 2020

While Luke Williams wants to be sitting in the dugout this weekend, he knows that a free weekend gives the chance for the MK Dons squad to rest their legs after a hectic schedule.

The Dons have played five times since the turn of the year including two-midweek trips to Newport County and Burton Albion respectively.

Assistant Manager Williams is eager to get back on the touchline following last Saturday’s defeat to Sunderland, but noted having a weekend without football enables the team to recharge their batteries.

“If you lose, you want to play again straight away, but it does give us time to work and time to recover,” Williams told the local media during his press conference. “It has been a really busy schedule and I think in the next game, we’ll know if it has helped us or not.

“We’re trying to make the best use of the time we have and prepare for the next home game.

“The schedule will be tailored to how much each player has done. For some, the best thing they can do is rest because the schedule has been relentless. Training facilities have been difficult as pitches have been very heavy, we're moving from one surface to another.

“That may sound trivial, but it's really not - when the guys are pounding the pitch, the surface makes a huge difference. If you went to walk around the shops in stilettos, you might struggle the first time – you might get laughed at as well! But the next day you're in flip-flops, it's that different. We're moving constantly, and battling against the weather.”

Williams concluded, Some will rest at the weekend and some will do more to try and get up to the speed we need them to be.
