Thompson becomes signing number three

Midfielder arrives on loan from Norwich City...

16 January 2020

MK Dons have signed midfielder Louis Thompson on loan from Premier League side Norwich City.

Thompson, 25, moves to Stadium MK from the Canaries on a deal which will run until the end of the 2019/20 season.

The former Wales Under-21 international arrives with 135 career appearances to his name, with eight of those coming during Norwich’s Sky Bet Championship title-winning campaign last season. He has also enjoyed five seasons with Swindon Town and spent the first half of this term on loan at Shrewsbury Town.

He becomes Russell Martin’s third signing of the January Transfer Window, following the arrivals of his Norwich teammate Carlton Morris and former Swindon Town colleague Ben Gladwin.

“I’m delighted,” Thompson said in his first interview with iFollow MK Dons. “The team are playing a great brand of football and I wanted to get down here and be a part of that. Hopefully I can take to it like a duck to water and me and the team can kick on.

“I always knew Russ would go into coaching – it’s a natural progression for him. He’s a born leader and he was always very vocal and expressive as my captain and he always had a knack for saying the right things.

“I’m a combative player who likes to get forward as well as read the game well defensively. I want to chip in at both ends of the pitch - hopefully I can do that and help the team pick up the points needed to climb the table.”

Thompson began his career with Swindon Town and progressed through the Wiltshire club’s young ranks before making his senior debut as an 18-year-old in an EFL Cup match against Aston Villa in October 2012.

After starring as a young player with Swindon, and representing Wales at youth level, he caught the eye of Norwich City and made the move to Carrow Road in September 2014.

He enjoyed three loan spells back to Swindon before featuring six times in the Canaries’ 2018/19 Sky Bet Championship title-winning campaign.

Thompson spent the first half of this season on loan at Shrewsbury Town but now makes the move to Stadium MK in a bid to help the Dons rise up the Sky Bet League One table.

Russell Martin said of his new signing: "I’m delighted to get this one done. I know Louis has the right character and quality to really strengthen us both on and off the pitch – he is exactly the type of player that we want at the Club.

“He is another player who has shown real desire to come to MK Dons despite interest from other clubs, some in the Championship. A big thank you must also go to Neal Adams, Stuart Webber and Norwich City in allowing both Louis and Carlton Morris to come here.

“If we manage Louis correctly and keep him fit then we have a top player on our hands – a player who earned a move to the Premier League from this level. I’m excited to have him on board.”
