Russ reflects on the 3-0 win over Bristol Rovers...

Russell Martin’s MK Dons made it back-to-back league wins on New Year’s Day to move out of the bottom three in Sky Bet League One for the first time in two months.

The Dons, who beat Portsmouth 3-1 in their final match of 2019, comfortably saw off an in-form Bristol Rovers side at Stadium MK, with goals from Rhys Healey, Sam Nombe and Kieran Agard securing the 3-0 triumph.

“I thought the players were excellent,” Martin said in his post-match press conference.

“We’ve come through a difficult period physically, with so many games in such a short period of time, and they’ve given us everything they’ve got. To a man, they’ve been outstanding and it’s a testament to what we’ve got in this building.

“The last two results have been excellent, but so have the performances. What the fans, the Chairman and we want as a team, is to be on the front foot and to be aggressive - I couldn’t ask for anymore in terms of that.

“With the league position we are in, for them to play like that, with that much confidence, courage and conviction, is phenomenal - I’m so pleased for them.”

Wednesday’s win moved the Dons above Tranmere Rovers and into 20th place in the Sky Bet League One table – the first time they have been above the red line since the start of November.

Martin feels it’s nothing less than the squad deserve for their recent performances.

“I’m conscious and aware of where we are but I haven’t been paying too much attention to the table and I haven’t spent my time working out permutations," he commented.

“Of course, though, it is a boost psychologically [to be out of the bottom three]. It’s what the players have deserved for the way they’ve played in the last few weeks.

“It’s a positive and now it’s our job to make sure we stay out of it. We are in charge of our own destiny and it’s up to us as to where we head from here.”
