Houghton: Confidence from coaches has given me freedom to play

3 January 2020

Jordan Houghton earned heaps of praise for his performance during the New Year’s Day win over Bristol Rovers from both fans and staff.

Marshalling the defence, Houghton looked to bring MK Dons out from the back, while also aiming to retain possession.

His eye-catching performance was capped with an assist after he played a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Kieran Agard who slotted home for the third goal of the afternoon.

Houghton, who has been an ever-present in the Dons team this season, noted how the support and feedback he’s received from Russell Martin and Luke Williams has helped him improve as a player.

“Russ keeps telling me I need to believe in myself a bit more,” Houghton told the local media following the 3-0 win at Stadium MK. “He has confidence in me, so I need to bring more to the game. I feel I do the short stuff well, but if I can chip in with an assist or create an opportunity on goal – then happy days!

“The last few games have been tough because teams are starting to put a striker back, or a number 10 onto me. We spoke about me getting into positions to still dominate and control a game from a different position.

“Fair play to Russ and Luke for that - I've tried to take it onboard. I got a lot more touches today, but that comes from the authority we have when we play out.”

“I know sometimes fans have squirmish moments but it helps me. When we play that game, their strikers got really frustrated after just 15 minutes. Their whole demeanour was deflated, they were on the way down and we were going up another notch.

“Sometimes it can be touch-and-go, but that's what we've all bought into. It helps me because teams then drop off and give me more space.”
