Alex Gilbey has been named the Sky Bet League One Player of the Month for December.
The midfielder was in stunning form last month, netting three goals in six appearances and playing a pivotal role in MK Dons’ upturn in performances and results.
“I’m over the moon to win the award and it’s a really proud moment for me,” Gilbey told mkdons.com.
“I’m thankful, of course, to the staff and the rest of the team. In December, we performed really well and picked up some important results – now it’s time for all of us to build upon it now, win more games and climb the table.”
Gilbey saw off competition from Marcus Forss, Sean McConville and Connor Ogilvie to win the award, which he was presented with alongside his teammates at Stadium MK.
It is the first time the 25-year-old has won an EFL monthly accolade and it is the first time an MK Dons player has done so since Dele Alli was named Sky Bet League One Player of the Month in January 2015.
Manager Russell Martin commented: “I’m absolutely delighted for Alex. He has been excellent for us and while some of his goals have been outstanding, his general play has been outstanding too.
“He’s made a massive improvement in terms of end product - we all knew he was capable of it and now he’s really starting to show it. It’s down to the application he’s giving us in both training and matches. He’s taken on every bit of information we’ve given him.
“I’m really pleased for him and the team too because, as Alex alluded to, it’s a team effort. It’s all about the team having to function properly and everyone doing their jobs. It’s why we had a picture together and Alex will be the first person to thank his team mates for helping him get the award.”
