Forwards form pleasing Russ

4 January 2020

Russell Martin has been pleased with the impact his returning strikers have made in recent weeks.

MK Dons have found the net 13 times under Russell Martin’s management, with over 60% of them coming from his strikers.

Joe Mason, Rhys Healey, Sam Nombe and Kieran Agard have all found the target since Martin’s appointment, with Mason and Healey enjoying the best form in front of goal – Mason has four strikes in his last eight appearances while Healey has netted in each of his last three matches.

“Everyone was aware of the struggles when they were injured,” Martin commented.

“As I’ve said before, our strikers are as good as any in this division on their day - they give us a real threat.

“I think we’re giving them positions on the pitch to get chances and it’s a massive boost to have them all fit and firing. It certainly gives me selection problems.

“Joe just wasn’t able to start [against Bristol Rovers] as he had nothing in him after playing so much football recently. It’s a massive bonus for seeing Sam getting 90 minutes under his belt and Rhys play a little longer too.

“Kagsy, as well. He has been frustrated but he comes on and gets a goal. You can always rely on Kagsy because he’s such a good pro.”

Not only has Martin been pleased with the number of goals scored by his side of late, but also the timings of those finishes.

MK Dons have scored in the final 10 minutes of each of their past two wins and Martin believes that is down to three factors.

“It’s been massive for us and I think it comes down to a few things,” he told the media.

“One, we’ve been wearing other teams out by having sustained pressure in the final third, and two we’re getting fitter and stronger.

“Also, it’s down to their mentality. Rather than getting anxious about being in front, we’re starting to enjoy ourselves.”
