Dons feeling fresh after free weekend

Russell Martin's side ready and raring to go for January...

6 January 2020

It wasn’t a full winter break, but Russell Martin’s MK Dons did get to enjoy a much-needed rest last weekend, in preparation for a busy and testing January.

The Dons saw their scheduled Sky Bet League One trip to Burton Albion postponed on Saturday, due to the Brewers’ involvement in the Third Round of the Emirates FA Cup.

It gave Martin’s players an extra few days of recovery time, ahead of their run of four games in 14 days coming up – a run which starts on Tuesday at Newport County.

“Everyone got a physical rest and it was nice to be at home for a few days,” Martin said in his pre-match press conference, ahead of the Leasing.com Trophy tie at Rodney Parade.

“The players and staff worked extremely hard over the Christmas break so they deserved a little break. Everyone has come back refreshed and ready to go for what will be an important month for us.”

While the players and support staff were able to enjoy some time off, there was very little downtime for Martin and his coaches, who spent the weekend preparing for upcoming matches.

“While there as a day off in there somewhere, me and the coaches spent our weekend watching players and watching our opposition,” Martin said.

“There is still work to be done to get to where we want to be. We’ve had a couple of good results but we’re conscious that we haven’t cracked it yet.

"There is still lots of room for improvement and there was a lot of dialogue about that over the weekend.”
