Russ: Work still to do

MK Dons boss reflects on the 2-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers...

3 February 2020

Russell Martin insists his MK Dons side won’t get carried away despite Saturday’s success moving them nine points clear of the bottom three.

Goals from Rhys Healey and Ben Gladwin helped Martin’s men beat second-placed Wycombe Wanderers 2-0 at Stadium MK - their second successive home win and their fourth in five games in Milton Keynes.

It was a result which now the Dons closer to 12th in the Sky Bet League One table than 21st but boss Martin knows their work is still far from done.

“I'm really pleased but we have to keep marching on because nothing has been achieved yet,” he said in his post-match press conference at the weekend.

“I don’t look at the league too much, but for the boys it's a real boost and it does put the pressure on teams around us. We can't get carried away, though.”

On the match itself, Martin commented: “We were excellent. To a man, they were brilliant – they did their jobs at set pieces, defended brilliantly and were really brave with the back-line. It was just a really good team performance.

“It was a different challenge for us, and we showed a different side to our game. I've got huge respect to Gareth and his team – they are second in the league for a reason. They work harder than most teams and they are harder to break down than most.

“We knew it wasn't going to be pretty at times but we were patient and in, the end, we deserved the win, no doubt about it. It was a really important win for us.”

He added: “I'm just pleased to come away from our two home games with wins. I'm really pleased with how we're playing at home. Teams know they're not going to have an easy day.”
