Russ balancing short-term goal with long-term ambitions

MK Dons boss speaks about short-term and long-term goals...

Russell Martin is finding the balance between focusing on MK Dons’ short-term goal of retaining in their Sky Bet League One status, as well as building towards their long-term ambitions.

Since being appointed as MK Dons manager in November, Martin has led his team from a perilous position inside the relegation zone to nine points clear of the bottom three.

Work still needs to be done to ensure that Martin’s men will be playing third-tier football in 2019/20 and while prioritising that mission, the Dons boss says he is also keeping an eye on his long-term plan for developing the Club.

“Our short-term goal is to stay in the league, no doubt about it, but we have long term visions for this club too,” Martin said after Saturday’s 2-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers at Stadium MK.

“When the chairman gave me the job, we spoke about it being a long-term thing, which is what we both wanted.

“Our work is a daily process but there has to be a long-term goal at the end of it all. This season, it is about staying in the league but above and beyond that, it’s about creating a team that gets better all the time, with a culture that demands that.”

It’s not just on the pitch, though, where Martin hopes to develop the Dons over the coming months and years.

“The fans are starting to enjoy it too,” he said.

“They are really starting to connect with the players and the players are really connecting with them again too. That’s what I want and that’s what we want as a Football Club.”
