Russell Martin insists MK Dons remain wary of the threat below them in the Sky Bet League One table – and they will continue to do so until their third-tier status is mathematically secured.
Martin’s men have moved from three points adrift of safety to nine points clear of the bottom three over the last two months and have 16 games remaining to seal their place in Sky Bet League One for the 2020/21 campaign.
“The season isn’t over and we haven’t cracked things yet,” the manager said in his pre-match press conference ahead of this weekend’s trip to Shrewsbury Town.
“We have to be aware of the threat [of relegation]. The gap isn’t big enough for us not to be. Our objective is to stay in the league and until it’s mathematically sure, then I won’t feel relaxed about it.
“What we have done is put ourselves within touching distance of a few teams above us in the table, that we can look to overtake. We have come a long way but the players need to be aware that there is still a threat behind them.
“It’s all about the process for us. If we keep doing the work Monday to Friday and keep showing the same application, then I believe we will be fine. I think the players believe that too.
“We have to maintain that intensity and those standards, otherwise we’ll become more involved in the threat below us than we want to.”
Russell Martin's MK Dons are back in Sky Bet League One action this weekend when they take on Shrewsbury Town at the Montgomery Waters Meadow.
