Russ’ pride after ‘outstanding’ away performance

Russell Martin's MK Dons beat Charlton Athletic 1-0 at The Valley...

Russell Martin revealed his pride after an ‘outstanding’ performance from his MK Dons side at The Valley.

The Dons made it back-to-back away league victories on Wednesday night courtesy of a 1-0 win over promotion-chasing Charlton Athletic.

After dominating from start to finish, it was a thoroughly deserved three points for Martin’s men and, following the game, an emotional boss couldn’t hide his delight.

“It was outstanding,” Martin told iFollow MK Dons. “It has been tough for me so I’m emotional about it - I'm proud, I'm really proud.

“We've had a lot of really good performances this season, matching stats to tonight, but to do it against a team like this away from home, with their firepower, and to win the game - I needed that, I really needed that.

“The thing that has been hurting us is conceding early, and we knew if we stopped that, that's the performance we would get. That has been a fundamental flaw and hopefully that's the end of it now.

“We could have scored more. We had about 20 shots away from home, and never looked uncomfortable. We stuck to our plan, did what we wanted to do.

“Everyone was outstanding. If I single people out, we'll be here for a long time! I'm really grateful to everyone involved tonight.”

The Dons have lost just one of their last seven league matches, with that only loss coming to league leaders Hull City at Stadium MK. Now up to 17th in the Sky Bet League One table, Martin wants his team to keep building momentum.

“The bottom line is we're becoming really hard to beat,” he said. “We've lost one in seven and that was against a team top of the league.

“We have to keep building now and be relentless in our approach and we have to justify what we're doing. Performances like that will do that.

“If we stick to what we know, it will bring us success.”
