Russ: Excited and energised

Russell Martin set to take charge of his first league match as MK Dons manager...

16 November 2019

Russell Martin is excited and energised ahead of his league debut as MK Dons manager, following a week of improvement and development from his side.

This afternoon, Martin takes charge of his first Sky Bet League One match since taking over from Paul Tisdale a fortnight ago, as his MK Dons side travel to the University of Bolton Stadium to take on Bolton Wanderers.

A win would be the team’s first in the league since mid-September and could see them climb as many as three places in the table by the time the weekend’s out.

“I'm excited,” Martin said in his pre-match press conference ahead of today’s clash with the Trotters.

“We've had two games already which I'd have liked to have won, but the big focus has been on this one. We didn't take those two games lightly, and we wanted to win them, but I think we all knew the big picture, which is this one.

“It’s our first league game and I'm ready for it. I feel energised after these last two weeks and we're going there feeling a lot more positive about ourselves.

“What we've done in the last two weeks is bring that spring back into everyone's step. Their chests are out a bit more, and hopefully a win will get us started, and from there we can build. Getting a first win would mean a huge amount to us.”

In Martin’s way of a first victory as MK Dons manager is a Bolton side who have won their last two league meetings and could move above par with a victory, following their 15-point deduction at the start of the campaign.

“It'll be a test we're looking forward to,” Martin said. “It's a great place to go and play and it’s a team on the up, with a good manager.

“They're brought in some really good players and they are a completely different animal to the one they were at the start of the season. It will be tough.”
