Wheeler ‘chuffed’ to contribute to promotion

10 May 2019

Not only did David Wheeler score the goal that secured MK Dons return to Sky Bet League One at the first time of asking, the QPR loanee played a crucial role in the final stages of the season heading into the clash with Mansfield Town.

The forward netted three goals in the final four games of the season, including an important equaliser against Port Vale and the opening goal in the 2-1 win over Notts County.

Wheeler’s season culminated at Stadium MK, with his header in the second minute proving to be enough to seal promotion for Paul Tisdale’s side.

“To know I’ve contributed in some way towards promotion is enough.

“I’m really chuffed, I’ve had a really tough time in the last few years – I haven’t played an awful lot. I had a really tough time, not playing much, so coming here and playing has helped me so much.

“In the last few games, I showed what I’m capable of – I’m happy to have contributed to the promotion.”

Wheeler quickly adhered himself to the MK Dons faithful and soon had his own chant – one he is a big fan of!

“I love tequila,” Wheeler jested. “I’ve been lucky to have that affinity with the fans, it’s a great tune to have – I’m so grateful to have their support.

“I came here and hadn’t scored many, but they stayed behind me and I’m really grateful for that.”
